Cockroaches

Understanding Cockroaches Common to Jacksonville and Ormond Beach

Cockroaches are one of the most common and unwelcome household pests in Northeast Florida. They thrive in warm, humid environments and are often found in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where food and moisture are present.

Roaches feed on human and pet food, contaminate surfaces, and can produce unpleasant odors. More importantly, they are known to carry bacteria and trigger allergic reactions and asthma, especially in children and sensitive individuals. Because cockroaches reproduce quickly and hide well, infestations can grow rapidly without professional treatment.

Common Cockroach Species in North Florida

German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are the most common indoor cockroach and the species most people think of when they hear “roach.” They reproduce quickly, with overlapping generations, and can complete their life cycle in about 100 days under ideal conditions.
These roaches are typically found indoors near food and moisture sources, making kitchens and bathrooms prime targets. Due to their rapid population growth, German cockroach infestations can become severe without prompt, professional control.

American Cockroaches

Often called palmetto bugs or waterbugs, American cockroaches are the largest common roach species in Florida. They are reddish-brown and can grow over an inch long.
These roaches are fast runners and can squeeze into small cracks despite their size. They are commonly found in damp areas such as basements, crawl spaces, drains, and utility rooms, and may enter homes from outdoors.

Brown-Banded Cockroaches

Brown-banded cockroaches are smaller and lighter in color, with distinctive light bands across their wings and abdomen. Unlike other roaches, they prefer drier environments and are often found in living rooms, bedrooms, or higher areas like cabinets and shelves.
They tend to hide during the day and are less commonly found in commercial kitchens, but they can still spread bacteria and contaminate surfaces inside homes.
