Background information about South Jacksonville:
Southside, a section of the city also known by the name “South Jacksonville”, is one of several large areas of Jacksonville, Florida. Other large areas of Jax include Arlington, Northside, Westside, and the Beaches. The designation “South Jacksonville” originally applied to a territory to the south of Downtown Jax and across the St. Johns River; which has become a neighborhood now known as San Marco. Today, however, the title covers a much larger region.
The Southside continues to be a developing, blossoming, and bustling business center, among the attractions being two shopping malls, The Avenues, and St. Johns Town Center, each with a variety of retail and dining opportunities.

The Avenues Mall a multi-level shopping center that offers over 1.1 million square feet of shopping in specialty stores like Forever 21, the Disney Store, and Charlotte Russe to full-service department stores like Belk, Dillard’s, J.C. Penney’s and Sears. The Avenues also offers a range of refreshment options, from Auntie Ann’s Pretzels and French Fry Heaven to a diverse food court and even sit down dining, in restaurants including Ruby Tuesday.
St. Johns Town Center is a beautiful open-air shopping mall with more than 1 million square feet of retail and dining options, from high-end retailers like Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. to discount giants Ross and Target, and more than 150 brand-name specialty stores. Dining options include Seasons 52, P.F. Chang’s, The Cheesecake Factory, and Maggiano’s Little Italy. Close to the St. Johns Town Center is the Tinseltown area, with a movie theater and inviting local nightlife spots.
Deerwood Country Club is a private, member-owned club located in Jacksonville’s Southside neighborhood. In the 1890s (way before the Southside area was filled with subdivisions, shopping centers and multi-lane highways) the area was part of a purchase of a 50,000 acres tract of North Florida land. In 1960, nine hundred of those acres were developed into an exclusive residential community with stately homes and luxurious amenities, and Deerwood Country Club was born. Over the years, Deerwood has become a destination for golfers and tennis professionals the world over. The Deerwood Country Club once hosted the Greater Jacksonville Open (which later became THE PLAYERS Championship). A private school (known today as Jacksonville Country Day School) was added to provide extra convenience to families and school children. In 1999, the club’s members banded together and purchased the Club, making Deerwood an equity club. A $10 million renovation to the property in 2004 included a brand-new Clubhouse, Golf Course and Fitness Center. For decades, Deerwood Country Club has been a sought-after venue for weddings, birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, bar/bat mitzvahs, holiday parties and corporate meetings.
Dog Wood Park provides 42 acres of space for dogs and their human companions to swim and play. Named one of the “Top 10 Dog Parks You Need to See in Your Lifetime” by Dogster.com, Dog Wood Park is one of the largest fenced dog parks in the nation. Non-members must pay a fee, members can join the Park by the month or annually.
