Additional information about Ponte Vedra and Ponte Vedra Beach:
Even as other seaside communities began to develop along the coast, the Ponte Vedra Beach area was only sparsely populated until the early 20th century. In 1914, a private commercial firm discovered a way to recover minerals from beach sands, and a community known as Mineral City grew up around the mining operations there.
When mineral demand dropped after the First World War, the commercial firm decided to convert the area into a resort community. That was when the name of the community was changed to Ponte Vedra.
Today, Ponte Vedra is an unincorporated seaside community in St. Johns County, Florida, located southeast of downtown Jacksonville and north of St. Augustine. Ponte Vedra is one of the string of Atlantic Ocean beaches in the area known collectively as the Jacksonville Beaches, or simply, The Beaches. Ponte Vedra Beach’s 40-foot sand dunes are among the highest in Florida, leading down to white sand beaches made from Appalachian quartz and ancient coquina. The twisted oaks and hammocks of wild palmettos along the beachfront are dotted with seaside resorts and private retreats.
Locally Ponte Vedra is known as an upper income tourist resort area and is nationally well known for its association with golfing. TPC (Tournament Players Club) Sawgrass offers two championship golf courses that are open to the public, and is home to the PGA Tour, and The Players Championship.
This seaside area is known for its resorts, including the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, the Lodge and Club, and the Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa. While there are multiple beach clubs along the beach, there are still many public accesses to the beach in the residential neighborhoods.
In southern Ponte Vedra Beach, along the Ocean, the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve is a protected area providing habitat for a wide variety of fish and wildlife. The Reserve’s Environmental Education Center (EEC) provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for people of all ages to learn about the many functions of the coastal and estuarine ecosystem and the natural history of Northeast Florida. Students are encouraged to visit the Environmental Education Center and Guana River Marsh Aquatic Preserve as an extension of their classroom learning.
